Marcílio Alves graduated in Mechanical Engineering, Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in 1983, where he also obtained his Master Degree in 1987. He then moved to São Paulo, becoming a lecturer at the University of São Paulo, being currently an Associate Professor. In 1992, he moved to England, where he obtained his Doctoral Degree at The University of Liverpool Impact Research Centre, in 1996. Back to Brazil, he established at the University of São Paulo, the Group of Solid Mechanics and Structural Impact. He obtained grants during this period over 2 Million Euros, which supports his research activities in the areas of structural impact, material characterisation and non-linear finite elements. In 2004, he became a Doctor in Science from University of São Paulo. He has published some 50 international articles in scientific journals covering theoretical, experimental and numerical aspects of non-linear dynamic solid mechanics, and edited 4 books on Structural Impact and Solid Mechanics. He headed the Solid Mechanics Committee of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering and he is the Editor and Founder of the Latin American Journal of Solids and Structures. He belongs to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Impact Engineering. He has published with authors from different universities of Brazil, UK, Germany, Bulgaria, China, Australia, Finland and Norway. He is president of the International Society of Impact Engineering and author of the present book.
